Happy Anniversary Marilyn

September 15, 1995, dates a memorable day for the Virgin Islands. Hurricane Marilyn ripped thru the territory as a catastrophic hurricane. To say that it changed some lives in an understatement. Just as most Americans can tell you where they were on September 11, 2001, most Virgin Islanders can tell you exactly what was happening on this date 17 years ago.

It seems no coincidence that September 15 also marks the height of hurricane season. It represents the peak of the bell curve. So yes, I get warm fuzzies when we reach this date each season without damage from a serious storm. It gives the feeling that each day that passes gets us that much closer to abandoning the daily checks upon the NOAA website.

Noted is the truth that we have not been hit by a devastating hurricane in the time since Marilyn. Outsiders often assume that we get hurricanes very frequently, but the truth is, they don't hit very often.

So Happy Anniversary Marilyn. Thanks for not sending any storms our way since.
