The documentary film “23-1/2 Acres: No Development Needed” won the Black Coral Award for Best Documentary Under 20 Minutes at the Third Annual Reef Renaissance Film Festival held Saturday, June 6, at Coral World Ocean Park on St. Thomas. The film highlights Mandahl Bay.

EPA and DPNR Investigating Apparent Chemical Poisoning

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the territory’s Planning and Natural Resources Department are investigating what appears to be chemical poisoning by a pesticide that affected four members of a vacationing family from Wilmington, Del., according to representatives from both agencies.

Regatta Kicks Off Friday with 62 Yachts

Yachts from the Caribbean, U.S. and Europe cast off Friday in the 42nd St. Thomas International Regatta, presented by TAG Heuer.

Hosted out of the St. Thomas Yacht Club from Friday through Sunday, the regatta boasts a fleet of 62 boats ranging from 60-foot super high-tech sport boats to 16-foot beach cats.

DPNR: Methyl Bromide Pesticide Came from Puerto Rico

Although the use of pesticides containing methyl bromide was discontinued for residential use about 10 years ago because of its impact on the ozone layer, the St. Thomas-based Terminix pest control company was able to buy it in Puerto Rico, Planning and Natural Resources spokesman Jamal Nielsen said Wednesday.
