Leaving the Virgin Islands

St. Thomas Virgin Islands

Leaving the Virgin Islands. It pains me to even say these words. But they don't likely mean what you think they mean. When I say "leaving the Virgin Islands", I am referring to a vacation or short visit elsewhere. Not a permanant departure.

So where do I go?

Every year, I leave to Las Vegas, Nevada, in early July. It is the time of the WORLD SERIES OF POKER. And a great time it is. I meet several friends from my hometown (St. Louis, Missouri), and we basically sit around the poker tables for fourteen hours a day. Heaven for some people, highly undesirable for others.

What else is there to do? Let's look at this from an islander perspective:

Hotels- the luxury hotels in Las Vegas are unsurpassed anywhere else in the World. It numbs the mind just trying to think about it all. These places are so nice that it really does remove any thoughts of home once you are there.

Pools- of course these hotels have incredible pools, with lots of activities to compliment the typical usage. For example, if you ever get the chance to attend the Sunday night pool part at Encore, just do it. Not for the weak of hearth, and be ready for crowds. But also be ready for one of the grandest parties of the year.

Shopping- Luxury shops surround the casinos. Anything and everything you could ever need.

Restaurants- I love the food in the VI, but we have a limited amount of restaurants. Las Vegas has phenomenal choices, and they are endless.

People watching- As good as anywhere in the WOrld

Concerts- Live music every night, tons of options. I was lucky enough to see WIDESPREAD PANIC at THE JOINT (located in the Hard Rock Hotel). Great show. And could have seen much more.

Shows- The basis of nightlife in Vegas

Fights- I was lucky enough to be there during UFC 200, which added to the people watching. There is a world class fight almost every weekend in Vegas, whether it is MMA or boxing

Basketball- Summerleague basketball was happening, so you saw the professional players everywhere. Pretty easy to spot if you look up.

other Sports- whether live or on TV, it can be seen most everywhere. Including the casino sports books. Wimbledon is always going on this time of year.

Much much more- the opportunities are endless. And this is why I love going to Vegas. It offers so much that you will never get here in the islands. But I must admit, I am always ready to go home.
