Snorkeling

Swimming with the fishes. That phrase sounds so much more intimidating when heard on the Sopranos. But not here in the Virgin Islands. The water clarity is incredible. I have been scuba diving and able to see a pelican dive on the surface while I am eighty feet below. Consider the fact that the water is temperate year around, and you have some of the best snorkeling in the world.

My favorite locations to frequent are around St. John, which is only three miles from the East End of St. Thomas. You can be over there in minutes. There are countless locations both around the island and the outlaying cays between St. Thomas and St. John. Depending upon the direction of the wind and currents, you can almost always find a peaceful location to swim with the fish and corals.

But you don't need a boat to go snorkeling. There are also many locations directly off the island. Sapphire Beach, Coki Point, and Secret Harbor all offer beach access snorkeling. But there are dozens of more spots to access the great waters of the Virgin Islands.

Most of the sailing and power boat trips can also include a snorkel spot, and options often include the British Virgin Islands as well as the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Do yourself a favor and be sure to try snorkeling while you are on island. It is healthy, fun, and sure to be a wonderful experience for everyone involved.
